UNM Volleyball Sweeps Houston Christian in Lobo Invitational
The University of New Mexico (UNM) Lobos secured a 3-0 sweep against Houston Christian in the Lobo Invitational, with key contributions from several players.
In the game, Addison France posted 9 kills, Solia Angilau added 8 kills (on 14 swings), and Zoe Leonard contributed 5 kills and 3 blocks. Naomi Chankoumi led the team with a match-high 13 kills.
Madeleine Miller, who filled in for the injured Lauryn Payne and Liepa Lavickyte, played a pivotal role in the victory. Miller finished the game with 40 assists, eight digs, and three blocks. Allana Archie had 11 kills for Houston Christian.
The Lobos faced a 17-16 deficit in set one but managed to erase it and win the set. Houston Baptist attempted to limit Gioia Riccato's contributions, but other Lobos stepped up at the net. Chankoumi and Riccato led UNM's comeback in set one.
The first set started with Houston Christian leading 9-3, but UNM found its energy and rhythm to take the lead. Houston Christian's Savanna Stevens had three consecutive service aces in set two, but the Lobos responded and took the set. The team kept Houston Christian at arm's length throughout set three.
Houston Christian rallied from a 22-15 hole in set two to tie the score at 23, but UNM held on to win the set and the match.
UNM coach Jon Newman-Gonchar expressed pride in his team for battling through a challenging situation. "I'm proud of the way our team fought back after a sluggish start," Chankoumi said. "We were aware of our slow start, and we determined to improve."
Lavickyte suffered a hamstring injury and is not expected to play in the upcoming Tarleton State Invitational. Payne is nursing a leg injury but is expected to return before Mountain West play begins.
Despite the injuries, the Lobos showed resilience and teamwork, with several players stepping up to contribute to the team's victory. The coach of the UNM volleyball team that won the Lobo Invitational is Jon Newman-Gonchar.
