Warnings about the Minneapolis church shooter's mental state were issued by a teacher several years prior to the tragic shooting incident
In a shocking turn of events, a mass at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis was disrupted by a tragic shooting that claimed the lives of two young children, eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski. The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, also died by suicide shortly after the attack.
Before the incident, Westman, who was known as Bob in Sarah Reely's art classroom during school days, shared a handwritten manifesto on YouTube, questioning her decision to identify as a woman. Court papers reveal that Westman changed her name from Robert to Robin in 2020 to reflect her new identity.
The manifesto also contained a cryptic message expressing frustration with being transgender, and Westman mentioned the possibility of chopping off her long hair before the attack.
Sarah Reely, a former teacher of Westman, recognised her after the shooting and stated that she knew Westman was a kid who needed help. Reely intentionally built a relationship with Westman, but expressed her concerns about Westman's well-being, particularly noting evidence of self-harm on Westman's arms. Reely reported this need for help to the school, which offered counseling or support for Westman's self-injuries before the tragic event occurred.
Reely also spoke out against the politicization of the tragedy from both left and right wing supporters. She emphasized the need for improved mental health support for troubled youth, citing barriers such as long waitlists, difficulty connecting with resources, stigma, schools' inability to afford multiple mental health specialists, and high costs without insurance.
Reely argued that calls for gun control would have been pointless given the killer's lack of a criminal record. The killer's actions serve as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and providing support for those in need.
A bizarre sculpture was posted with the killer's message on YouTube, and images of the Annunciation Catholic Church where the attack occurred can be seen in the article. The church community, along with the wider Minneapolis community, continues to grieve and heal from this devastating loss.
