Warnings Issued by Hennig-Wellsow Regarding the CDU Party
In the heart of Germany, the state of Thuringia has been embroiled in a political whirlwind, with the Left party and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) currently engaged in negotiations at the local level. This comes after the controversial election of Thomas Kemmerich as Minister President of Thuringia on February 5, 2020, with votes from the CDU and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).
Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, the designated federal chairwoman of the Left party and the party and parliamentary group leader in Thuringia, has been vocal about the challenges of working with the CDU. She claims that more than just administering is not possible with the CDU in Thuringia, citing the anniversary of Kemmerich's election as a "wake-up call" that showed the attempts of the extreme right to undermine democracy.
Hennig-Wellsow has also warned against permanent cooperation with the CDU, pointing to its past political actions, such as voting with the AfD in committees. She advocates for governments without the CDU, not only in Thuringia but also at the federal level.
The CDU, on the other hand, has been criticized for not learning from the crisis and for keeping the same leadership in place. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the former federal chairwoman of the CDU, has drawn personal consequences for the party's actions. However, the CDU has been seen sitting at the negotiating table with the red-red-green minority government in the morning, only to warn against the danger from the left in the evening.
The stability pact for Thuringia, concluded with the CDU, aims to pass a budget and enable new elections, now scheduled to take place on September 26 in parallel with the federal election. However, Hennig-Wellsow warns that this is not over yet, and the threat from the extreme right is still present.
As the negotiations continue, the political landscape in Thuringia remains uncertain, with tensions running high between the Left party and the CDU. The outcome of these negotiations could have significant implications not only for Thuringia but for German politics as a whole.
