Washing machine theory discounted by forensic doctor in inquiry concerning Zara Qairina's death

In the small town of Papar, the community is still reeling from the sudden and mysterious death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. On July 17, Zara was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a day after she was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory at 4 am.

The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) announced on Aug 13 that an inquest would be conducted into Zara's death. The hearing is currently being presided over by Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan.

During the inquest, Dr. Jessie Hiu, a forensic pathologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, testified in the Coroner's Court. Dr. Hiu, who has been with the Department of Forensic Medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital since 1998, conducted the post-mortem on Zara.

Dr. Hiu stated that it was impossible to place Zara, a 13-year-old student, inside a washing machine due to her weight. This assertion was made in response to questions posed by Deputy Head of Prosecution II Datuk Badius Zaman Ahmad.

Intriguingly, a washing machine was found at the scene, located on the ground floor, opposite the staircase. However, Dr. Hiu clarified that the washing machine found was a domestic, not an industrial, one. Moreover, Dr. Hiu did not check the size of the washing machine's drum, nor was an answer provided regarding its size in the text.

The washing machines mentioned in the article found in the building where Zara was discovered are standard household size. Dr. Hiu also testified that it is unlikely that a 53-kg load, such as Zara, could be operated in the washing machine.

The AGC ordered the exhumation of Zara's remains for a post-mortem examination on Aug 8. The Coroner's Court is currently hearing evidence in the inquest into Zara's death, with Dr. Hiu being one of the key witnesses.

The investigation into Zara's tragic death continues, and the community awaits the findings of the inquest with a heavy heart.
