Weekly update on green advancements
In a recent survey by the Quebec Statistics Institute (ISQ), more than eight out of ten businesses in Quebec have adopted at least one circular economy practice. Recycling and composting (64%) and maintenance and repair (49%) are the most popular methods.
Meanwhile, in the American West, approximately 3500 bison roam the north of Yellowstone National Park. A German study, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, suggests that the migratory movements of these bison have beneficial effects on the ecosystem. The study indicates that the bison's grazing could potentially reduce the risk of fires and increase the diversity of small animals.
The study, which was based on seven years of observation, also found that vegetation in grazed areas contains up to 156% more proteins. Furthermore, the study provides insights into the ecological services provided by the millions of bison that once inhabited the Western plains.
However, a separate study published in Science has raised concerns about the impact of ocean acidification on marine life. The research, conducted by the Marine Ecophysiology Research Group, found that the dentition of blacktip reef sharks is constantly exposed to saltwater. After eight weeks, the teeth showed signs of corrosion, risking their mechanical properties and making them more brittle. The study suggests that ocean acidification could negatively impact the health of blacktip reef sharks.
In Quebec, nearly one in four businesses have integrated responsible consumption and procurement or donation and resale. Nearly one in five participate in the collaborative economy or do refurbishing. Giving resources a new life and extending their lifespan are the most commonly cited reasons for adopting circular economy practices.
The study on the impact of ocean acidification on shark species serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them. Meanwhile, the adoption of circular economy practices in Quebec businesses demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and a more environmentally-friendly approach to business.
