Weimer supports Berlusconi's contract with ProSiebenSat.1-Company
ProSiebenSat.1 to Focus on Local Offerings with MFE Takeover
In a significant development, Pier Silvio Berlusconi and Wolfram Weimer have confirmed joint lines for the future of ProSiebenSat.1, with Berlusconi's Media for Europe (MFE) group taking over a majority stake.
The MFE group, which Berlusconi has previously expressed a desire to use for building a large European TV network, will now hold over 75% of ProSiebenSat.1's voting rights. This move is expected to bring changes to the German broadcaster, with a focus on producing more local offerings tailored to the German audience.
This shift could mean less US content on ProSieben, Sat.1, Kabel & Co., as MFE aims to create original news and entertainment content. However, so far, there isn't much programming on P7S1 where "editorial independence is of central importance". Weimer, the CEO of ProSiebenSat.1, has emphasized the importance of maintaining this independence and has guaranteed the preservation of editorial and journalistic freedom.
Berlusconi, who is 56 years old, the same age as his father was when he entered politics, has denied his own political ambitions but recently stated he does not exclude entering politics in the future. His history in politics, if any, remains unclear.
Weimer, who entered politics at 60 years old, has previously expressed concerns about the potential dismantling of the Munich Unterföhring media location. The Berlusconis, known for their dealings with taxes and fibbing, have not provided explicit formal guarantees for Berlusconi's current promises.
The Federal Ministry of Culture and Media (BKM) announced the confirmation on Tuesday. The statement about Pier Silvio Berlusconi's political ambitions was made at an MFE event. The history of Berlusconi's attempts to build a large European TV network was with Leo Kirch.
Berlusconi's group, MFE, is now responsible for jobs, taxes, and the creative infrastructure in Germany, Italy, and Spain. The future of ProSiebenSat.1 remains to be seen, but the focus on local offerings and the guarantee of editorial independence offer a promising start.
