West London Derby Victory for Chelsea: Outstanding Showing by Joao Pedro and Estevao; Match Tarnished by More VAR Dispute
In a thrilling encounter at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea managed to secure a 2-0 win over Fulham, despite being outplayed for the majority of the match.
Enzo Maresca's team, appointed before the 2024-25 season, started the game on a shaky note. Tosin Adarabioyo, another defender for Chelsea, did not look entirely secure in a backtracking defensive line, while Malo Gusto, another defender, seemed a bit off the pace in the opening 45 minutes.
However, Joao Pedro, playing as a second striker, put in an excellent performance, showcasing quick feet, a turn of pace, and impressive aerial prowess. His efforts were rewarded when he headed in Enzo Fernandez's pinpoint corner in first-half stoppage time, giving Chelsea the lead.
The second half saw a controversial moment as Enzo Fernandez converted a 55th-minute penalty for Chelsea. The decision was controversial as it appeared Ryan Sessegnon handled the ball in the box, and Pedro's hand may have touched the ball seconds before. Regardless, the goal stood, and Chelsea extended their lead.
Despite the setback, Fulham fought back valiantly. Joshua King's 21st-minute goal for Fulham was disallowed by referee Robert Jones following a VAR review. The match remained tight until the 70th minute when Tyrique George, who came on for the injured Liam Delap, was forced to leave the pitch due to a hamstring injury.
With the game in the balance, Reece James entered the match when the game was virtually won. Marc Cucurella, the left-back for Chelsea, was very switched on throughout the match, while Trevoh Chalobah, a center-back for Chelsea, was fortunate that his coming together with Rodrigo Muniz was deemed a foul.
Andrey Santos picked up a booking for his most telling contribution off the bench, while Pedro Neto had a decent performance for Chelsea but was not as effective as Estevao. Jamie Gittens did not have much of an impact when he came on for Estevao.
In the end, it was a hard-fought victory for Chelsea, with Estevao, the teenager from Chelsea, delivering an exciting attacking display, consistently getting the better of Fulham's defense. Under the guidance of Enzo Maresca, a disciple of Pep Guardiola, Chelsea have shown resilience and determination, leading them to win the Conference League and Club World Cup while finishing fourth in the Premier League.
