West Nile-carrying mosquitoes found in Dresden
In a recent development, the Chatham-Kent Public Health (CKPH) has reported the first positive pool of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes from a trap in Dresden. This discovery has raised concerns about the potential transmission of the virus to people in the area.
The Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) e.V., through its project "CuliFo," which focuses on mosquito research, was the organization that initially detected the positive West Nile Virus in mosquitoes in Dresden.
West Nile Virus can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, in people who are bitten by infected mosquitoes. Mild symptoms may include fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue. However, severe symptoms require immediate medical attention and can include stiff neck, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, and even paralysis.
Older individuals and those with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of a more severe illness from West Nile Virus. To minimize the risk, CKPH recommends wearing light-colored clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. Additionally, all door and window screens should be tight and free of holes to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.
Staying indoors during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, can also help prevent exposure to West Nile Virus. Eliminating sources of standing water on your property can help prevent the breeding of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus.
Insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin is suggested by CKPH for protection against West Nile Virus. It's important to note that many who are bitten by an infected mosquito might not experience symptoms.
For more information about protecting against West Nile Virus, contact your local public health unit or visit their website for the latest updates and guidance. It's crucial to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure your health and safety.
