West's Showcase at Gamescom 2025 Yields No Fresh Announcements
Gamescom 2025: A Gathering of Global Gaming Giants in Cologne
Gamescom 2025, the most significant gaming event in the Western Hemisphere, took place in Cologne with a record-breaking attendance of 335,000 visitors and millions of global streaming viewers. Over 1,500 exhibitors from more than 70 countries showcased their latest offerings, spanning across a record floor space of 233,000 square meters.
The event was a testament to Europe's immense creative talent, with groundbreaking titles such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and the highly anticipated sequel, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, causing a stir. Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a ghost hunter god on a hyper-realistic tiger, promises to be an exciting addition to the gaming landscape.
Microsoft unveiled the ROG Ali Xbox, a challenge to Steam, running smoothly on the ROG Xbox Ally, powered by an optimized Windows 11 OS. Asus presented the ROG Xbox Ally for the first time at Gamescom 2025, officially showcasing the gaming handhelds at their booth and in livestreams during the event, particularly on August 19 and 20, 2025.
Sony presented Ghost of YoΜtei, while China's Black Myth: Zhong Kui garnered attention. Notable titles from the gaming world, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Resident Evil: Requiem, Silent Hill f, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, World of Warcraft: Midnight, and Hollow Knight: Silksong, were also showcased.
The gaming industry is under growing financial pressure, with venture capital becoming scarcer and investors acting more cautiously, especially in mobile gaming. To remain globally competitive, Europe needs stable frameworks that enable studios to scale and achieve sustainable growth. Regulatory changes are strengthening the trend towards fairness, transparency, and user wellbeing in gaming.
Monetization and user acquisition must be integrated into a studio's strategy from day one due to financial pressures. Subscription models, in-game advertising, and transparent in-app purchases are essential cornerstones for a sustainable gaming business. In-app purchases must be clearly communicated, refund processes are being simplified, and manipulative "dark patterns" are increasingly restricted.
The trade visitor area of Gamescom is where discussions about financing, monetization, and long-term sustainability take place. The event also supported GamesAid, the UK games industry charity that raises money for organizations working with children and young people.
If creativity, fair business models, and reliable structures come together, Gamescom will remain the Western flagship event and the place where the future of global gaming is defined. The event in Cologne serves as a vibrant reminder of the power of gaming to bring people together and inspire innovation.
