Whirlwind of Mental Conflict: Struggling with Inconsistency After Experiencing Manipulative Harm

In the world of mental health, two significant books have emerged in recent years, offering hope and guidance for those who have experienced relational trauma.

First published in 2013, Pete Walker's Complex-PTSD: from surviving to thriving provides a roadmap for survivors, offering a path from survival to thriving. This book, now a beacon for many, offers insights into the complexities of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its complex form, Complex-PTSD, which often arises from relational trauma.

Fast forward to 2015, and another seminal work was published by the psychotherapist Bessel van der Kolk. His book, The body keeps the score: brain, mind and body in the healing of trauma, has been widely recognised as a crucial resource in the field of trauma treatment. Van der Kolk's work delves into the intricate connections between the brain, mind, and body, and provides a comprehensive approach to healing, including brain-wise interventions such as EMDR, mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural therapy, expressive arts therapies, and other modalities.

Cognitive dissonance, a psychological term that refers to the mental discomfort experienced by a person who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, beliefs, or values, can be particularly challenging for survivors of relational trauma. However, with the support of a trained clinician, cognitive dissonance can be diminished, offering a path towards healing and resolution.

Looking back, we find that D.W. Winnicott's The child and family, published in 1957, also made a significant contribution to the understanding of relational trauma and its impact on individuals and families. Winnicott's work continues to influence the field today, providing a foundation for the more recent works of Walker and van der Kolk.

In conclusion, the journey towards healing from relational trauma is not an easy one, but with resources like those provided by Walker, van der Kolk, and Winnicott, survivors can find hope and a path towards thriving.
