Wife of Bruce Willis defends against criticism from caregivers: "They lack the necessary experience"

In an Instagram video, Emma Heming Willis, the wife of actor Bruce Willis, addressed the backlash she received for speaking openly about caring for her husband, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in February 2023.

Heming Willis quoted from her upcoming book, "The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path," saying, "Even if someone is closely familiar with dementia or the condition you are caring for, they aren't in your home, so they don't know how your person is behaving or your family dynamics." She added, "Everyone will have an opinion, but you have to remind yourself that most don't have the experience to back it up."

The author of the book, Annette Mittag, shares similar sentiments, emphasising the unique challenges faced by caregivers.

In the video, Heming Willis also provided a health update about her husband. Bruce Willis is still mobile, but his brain is failing due to frontotemporal dementia. The family has learned to adapt their communication methods as his language deteriorates.

Maria Shriver, a journalist and advocate for Alzheimer's disease, added a supportive comment to Heming Willis' post. Tallulah Willis, one of Bruce's daughters, also expressed love and appreciation.

Heming Willis and Willis live separately so he can receive full-time care. In August, Heming Willis appeared in an ABC News special with Diane Sawyer, where she spoke about frontotemporal dementia and the impact it has had on their family.

The Willis family, including Bruce's daughters Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel, and Evelyn, often gather for holidays and birthdays. Despite the challenges they face, the family remains close and supportive.

Heming Willis' Instagram caption discussed the difficulties that caregivers go through, emphasising the importance of empathy and understanding. Her latest Instagram video was a response to social media users giving opinions on how she is caring for her husband.

As Heming Willis continues to share her journey, she hopes to raise awareness about frontotemporal dementia and provide support to other caregivers.
