Witness the shifting climate as you stroll through the landscape
The city of Aachen, in collaboration with the Consumer Center NRW, is inviting the public to join two climate walks as part of the "Week of Climate Adaptation" from September 15 to 19.
On Wednesday, September 17, and Friday, September 19, participants will meet at Aachen-Münchner-Platz at 13:00 and 15:00 respectively. The meeting point is directly in front of the Consumer Center NRW.
The climate walks will be led by Dr. Daniel Kelterbaum and Dr. Timo Bißwanger. During these walks, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the effects of various gardens, such as gravel gardens, green front gardens, and the mini forest at Aachen-Münchner, on the city's climate.
The urban planning and design of Aachen incorporate green infrastructure and nature-based solutions to enhance resilience against heat and extreme weather events. These strategies mitigate urban heat island effects and improve stormwater management. These measures and their climate impacts are increasingly visible and being studied in Aachen, and are also reflected in other German cities adopting similar sustainable urban planning approaches.
The city planning and design in relation to heat storage and heavy rain protection will also be examined during the climate walks. To demonstrate temperature differences between various surfaces and materials, thermal imaging cameras will be used.
