Kristie Pereira, a 32-year-old resident of Maryland, adopted a two-month-old hound mix named Beau from the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation for $450. However, their journey together took an unexpected turn when Beau started experiencing health issues.

A year ago, Beau was surrendered to the rescue due to his inability to lift his hind legs or control his bowels. Veterinarians discovered that Beau was suffering from a liver condition, and the chances of finding the issue and it being fixable were considered slim. Euthanasia was suggested as an option.

Pereira was given liver enzymes by a vet but could not afford further tests due to their high cost, estimated to be up to $12,000. Despite her offer to reimburse the rescue for the surgery costs, her offer was not accepted.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Pereira was reportedly told that she couldn't be with Beau when it happened. Montgomery County Animal Services, which are contractually obliged to follow the policies of the rescue, declined her request to get Beau back.

However, a year later, Pereira discovered that Beau was alive and up for adoption from the same organisation. She claims that employees at the rescue gave her "support and encouragement" and told her that "sometimes euthanasia is the best thing to do."

The rescue has a policy not to rehome animals to pet parents who previously surrendered them. This policy, while intended to ensure the best interests of the animals, has left Pereira heartbroken.

Beau, who became a beloved companion, particularly as Pereira works from home, underwent surgery and is now seemingly healthy. However, he remains available for adoption.

This story serves as a reminder of the importance of early intervention when it comes to pet health. It's recommended to get in touch with a vet as soon as there are concerns about a pet's health.

Despite the heartbreak, Pereira continues to express her desire to have Beau back, most recently through the Associated Press. It remains to be seen whether the rescue will reconsider their decision in light of Beau's recovery.
