Woman from New Hampshire accused of slaying husband and two children in a murder-suicide, according to authorities, is also suspected of embezzling funds from her employer.
In the quiet town of Madbury, New Hampshire, a sense of shock and sorrow has enveloped the community following the discovery of a tragic incident. On August 18, the bodies of Emily Long, her husband Ryan Long, and their two sons, Parker Long and Ryan Long, were found in their home. The deaths of the family members have been ruled homicides, with Ryan Long dying from multiple gunshots, and the two children dying from a single gunshot, according to officials.
The family's tragic end has been linked to a series of events that unfolded in the months leading up to the incident. Emily Long, a former director of operations at Wing-Itz, a popular chicken wing chain in New Hampshire, was under investigation for embezzling approximately $660,000 from the business over a three-year period starting in January 2023.
The investigation into Emily Long's alleged theft was conducted by the Hampton Police Department. The complaint accusing her of theft was filed with the department on August 11, seven days before the murder-suicide. Derek Fisher, the owner of Wing-Itz, reported that Emily Long's bank statements looked unusual and were allegedly "doctored and manipulated."
Fisher confronted Emily Long about the suspicious bank statements on August 5, but she declined to accompany him to the bank. On August 11, Emily Long texted Fisher, stating she was resigning or could stay in a remote capacity, or he could terminate her. Fisher felt he had no other option and filed a complaint with the police on the same day.
In a surprising turn of events, the Hampton Police Department's investigation into Emily Long's theft was suspended following her death. The attorney general's office advises against speculating that the event was caused by a single reason or stressor. They are still investigating a motive for the murders.
The attorney general's office also emphasised that the public should not jump to conclusions about the cause of the tragedy. "It's important to remember that complex events like these often have multiple factors at play," they stated.
The discovery of the slain family on Aug 18 has left a deep impact on the community. Wing-Itz, in a show of sympathy, posted on Facebook expressing condolences for Emily Long's family on Aug 20. The business owner who accused Emily Long of stealing, David Mitchell, has expressed that he no longer seeks to recover the embezzled money, and believes the surviving toddler should receive all assets.
A third child, a toddler, was found unharmed in the home, and is currently being cared for by family members and authorities. The community continues to mourn the loss of the Long family and extend their support to those affected by this tragic event.
