Boss Dohler expresses opposition to dividing power regions in the electricity sector. - Workers' safety from ionizing radiation risks requires a new directive, suggested by the Commission, who are asked to prepare a proposal for its implementation.
In an interview, Stefan Dohler, the President of the Federal Association of Energy and Water Industry and CEO of Oldenburg energy supplier EWE, shared his insights on the role of hydrogen in achieving climate neutrality and the current debate about power price zones in Germany.
Dohler emphasised that within a power price zone, the wholesale price is determined by supply and demand. He also highlighted the crucial role of hydrogen, stating that without it, climate neutrality would not be achievable. However, Dohler cautioned against "ruining the hydrogen topic by typical talk."
On the matter of power price zones, Dohler expressed opposition to a split, believing that it would lead to a long phase of uncertainty. Instead, he suggested that politics should help simplify bureaucracy to aid companies in settling more cheaply where green power is produced.
Dohler referred to the decision of the steelmaker ArcelorMittal not to accept state funding for the climate-friendly conversion of plants, and he expressed concern about the transport of green power to remote regions, which incurs additional costs that must be borne by the general public.
The federal government has no plans for a change in the German power price zone, a decision that has been met with opposition from Bavaria and Baden-WΓΌrttemberg, among others. Regions such as Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen, and Brandenburg had campaigned for a reform, hoping that a split of the power market would lead to lower prices in North Germany.
In the hydrogen sector, companies and institutions like H-TEC SYSTEMS, WEH, GravitHy, thyssenkrupp Steel, and the Dillinger Group's Steelwind Nordenham are actively developing hydrogen infrastructure and technology. ArcelorMittal had planned to use hydrogen in the climate-friendly conversion of its plants.
Dohler's views on the hydrogen topic and power price zones come at a time when Germany is grappling with the transition to renewable energy sources and the role of hydrogen in achieving climate neutrality. His call for simplifying bureaucracy and avoiding euphoria in the hydrogen sector could shape the future of the energy industry in Germany.
