The Road Cycling World Championships are set to take place in Rwanda for the first time, from September 21 to 28. However, two key German riders, Florian Lipowitz and Nils Politt, will not be participating due to previous commitments and the challenging nature of the course, including vaccinations and the 5475 meters of elevation gain.

The German cycling team, announced by the national cycling federation, German Cycling, on Friday, consists of six members. Among them are Georg Zimmermann, Maximilian Schachmann, Jonas Rutsch, Felix Engelhardt, Florian Stork, and Miguel Heidemann.

Zimmermann, Schachmann, and Rutsch are among the most experienced riders on the team, with Schachmann, the German time trial champion, set to compete in the time trial event for the men's team. Heidemann will also participate in the time trial event, one day later than Schachmann.

The 31-year-old Cologne resident, Politt, was unable to participate due to the challenges of the course and additional challenges like vaccinations, as reported by the German Press Agency. Lipowitz, who finished third in the Tour de France, will also be absent.

The women's team for the World Championships includes Ricarda Bauernfeind, Liane Lippert, German champion Franziska Koch, and Antonia Niedermaier. Niedermaier will start the time trial event for the women's team.

Notably, reigning champion Tadej Pogacar will be starting in the Road Cycling World Championships. However, some notable absentees include Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert, and Mathieu van der Poel.

Despite the absence of Lipowitz and Politt, the German team is determined to make a strong showing at the World Championships, held for the first time in Rwanda.
