World leaders from the Asia-Pacific region advocate for immediate action towards a sustainable and robust planet earth.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) took centre stage at the Sixth Forum of Ministers and Environment Authorities of Asia Pacific, held in Nadi, Fiji, from 26 to 29 August 2025. The event, jointly organised by the Government of Fiji and UNEP, brought together environmental leaders from across the region to discuss pressing issues and chart a path towards a sustainable future.
The Fiji Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, which leads the nation's efforts to safeguard its natural environment and address the impacts of climate change, played a pivotal role in hosting the forum. UNEP, as the world's leading authority on the environment, supports nations in building low-carbon, nature-positive, and resource-efficient economies.
The forum served as a platform for member states to endorse a Chair's Summary that identified priority environmental issues in the region, including climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Five draft resolutions were introduced for the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), to be held in Nairobi from 8 to 12 December 2025.
South Korea proposed a resolution on accelerating circular economy strategies, while Fiji presented a plan for coral reef protection. Sri Lanka introduced an initiative to enhance youth participation in climate action, and Japan and India proposed resolutions on environmental agreements and wildfire management. Tuvalu announced its intention to submit resolutions on climate displacement and sea level rise for UNEA-7.
UNEP's work encompasses topics such as Carbon & Climate, Policy & Finance, and Water. The organisation serves as the region's premier platform for advancing sustainable solutions and strengthening environmental resilience. The forum also highlighted UNEP's focus regions, which include Asia Pacific, Global, India, Japan, South Korea, and Sri Lanka.
The Asia-Pacific Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum, which convened ahead of the main event, emphasised the need for urgent, collective action to tackle the region's environmental challenges. The forum in Fiji underscored the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in addressing the triple planetary crisisโclimate change, nature loss, and pollution.
As the seventh session of UNEA approaches, UNEP's work will continue to be a focus. The organisation's efforts are also associated with various tags, including biodiversity, pollution, UN, UNEP, conservation, climate, resilience, and oceans. The forum in Fiji was a significant step towards a sustainable and resilient Asia-Pacific region.
