Yearly School Shootings: Quantity and Locations

In the first month of 2025, eight school shootings have resulted in injuries or deaths, according to an analysis by Education Week. This unfortunate trend continues a pattern that has persisted in recent years.

The Education Week tracker, a comprehensive resource for K-12 school shootings, aims to inform discussions, debates, and solutions surrounding this critical issue. The tracker counts incidents where a firearm is discharged, causing bullet wounds for individuals other than the suspect or perpetrator, on school property or a school bus during school hours or school-sponsored events. It does not include suicides or self-inflicted injuries, nor incidents involving authorized individuals carrying guns on school property and discharging them in their official capacity.

Looking back at the previous years, the data shows a concerning increase in school shootings. In 2021, there were 35 such incidents, compared to 39 in 2024. The highest number was recorded in 2022, with 51 school shootings resulting in injuries or deaths.

Since 2018, a total of 229 such shootings have been reported. The year 2019 and 2018 each saw 24 school shootings with injuries or deaths.

The first school shooting of the new academic year, which took place on Aug. 27, 2024, was particularly tragic. Two children were killed and multiple people were injured in a shooting during a school mass at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minn.

It's worth noting that, as of the current search results, there are no reported incidents of shooting accidents at schools in Germany in 2025 that caused injuries or deaths.

The most recent school shooting, which occurred in an unknown location in 2023, resulted in 38 injuries or deaths. This was the highest number of victims since the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022.
