Young offender, responsible for stealing a fortune from a woman, is being sent to a correctional facility
In a recent decision, the Supreme Court of the Criminal College in the Republic of Komi has upheld a verdict against a local resident who was convicted under Part 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of Russia (fraud on a large scale).
The defendant, a young man born in 2006, was found guilty of embezzling nearly 1 million rubles from a victim he met through a dating site. The investigation, carried out by the Investigative Department of the "Ezhva" District Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Syktyvkar, revealed that the defendant had fabricated a story about his sickly, cancer-stricken younger sister to repeatedly ask the victim for small loans with interest.
The first instance court sentenced the defendant to one year of compulsory labor. The decision also took into account the compensation of the damage by the fraudster's relatives in the sentencing. However, the appeals presented by the defense were unsatisfied by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court's decision not to alter the sentence was made after considering the arguments presented by the defense. The court agreed with the first instance court's conclusions and left the verdict unchanged.
It is worth noting that the victim's financial resources were obtained following her father's death. The victim transferred these funds to the defendant, believing the fraud.
The investigation was a part of the criminal case against the defendant, and the location of the investigation was in Syktyvkar, specifically the "Ezhva" District Police Department. The Supreme Court of the Komi Republic reviewed the criminal case and considered the defense's appeal arguments, but ultimately upheld the verdict.
In addition, 10% of the defendant's wages will be withheld in favor of the state. The verdict was issued by the Syktyvkar City Court on June 30, 2025.
At the time of writing, there is no publicly available information about the person whom the Supreme Court of the Komi Republic charged and sentenced on June 30, 2025, under Part 3 of Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code.
