In a concerning development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a warning about a potential large-scale offensive by Russian troops in the Donbass region. The Donbass region, a conflict zone in eastern Ukraine, is home to two oblasts: Donetsk and Luhansk.

The city of Pokrovsk, located in the Donetsk Oblast, is considered the most threatened in the region. This strategically important transport hub, which had around 60,000 inhabitants before the war, has seen a significant decrease in population due to months of siege and constant shelling. As a result, only a few residents remain in Pokrovsk.

Zelensky made this statement in a conversation with journalists, also mentioning that the concentration of Russian troops in the area is up to 100,000. He further stated that Ukraine is prepared for the potential advance, despite Russian troops having not yet been able to capture Pokrovsk.

The news about the threat of a large-scale offensive and the troop concentration was reported by Interfax Ukraine. According to Zelensky, the leading Russian commanders involved in the planning of offensives in the Donbass region, threatening Pokrovsk, are part of the Russian strategic offensive operation focused on the Pokrovsk direction. However, specific names of commanders are not publicly detailed in recent reports.

The conflict in the Donbass region has been ongoing since 2014, making it a long-standing issue. The ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia have further escalated these concerns.

The Donetsk region, where Pokrovsk is located, is a part of the Donbass region. The area around Pokrovsk is particularly vulnerable, making the potential large-scale offensive a significant cause for concern.

As the situation continues to develop, it is crucial for both sides to prioritise diplomacy and de-escalation to prevent further loss of life and destruction.
