Zelensky states that negotiations with Russia are not yet feasible due to their unpreparedness
In the midst of escalating tensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his concern over Russian leader Vladimir Putin's visit to China, as Moscow continues to show no willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Ukraine.
According to President Zelensky, only Russia wants war, emphasizing the urgent need for a swift end to the conflict that has been ongoing for several years. Two weeks ago, a high-level meeting between Ukraine and Russia was proposed for today in Washington, but Russia is not ready for the proposed talks.
The Kremlin has offered various excuses for not engaging in discussions, as stated in the latest communique. Moscow has questioned President Zelensky's legitimacy, citing his rule under martial law and the expiration of his term according to the Ukrainian constitution. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also stated that Putin does not wish to speak with Zelensky.
Meanwhile, Putin's journey to China is explained as a strategic move to strengthen cooperation and alliances, likely related to diplomatic and economic interests amid international tensions. The constitutional amendments in Russia have allowed Putin to remain in power continuously since 2012.
In response, President Zelensky sees no willingness to engage in talks from Putin. He has also stated that Moscow is investing in further war, a concerning development for the ongoing conflict.
The expiration of Zelensky's term is not a unique issue for the Kremlin, as Lavrov has also stated that Zelensky remains in power despite his term having expired, in accordance with the Ukrainian constitution. The Kremlin has also demanded Ukraine's renunciation of NATO membership, withdrawal from parts of the Donbas, and exclusion of NATO troops after the war, conditions that Ukraine regards as unacceptable without security guarantees.
As the world watches the ongoing standoff between Ukraine and Russia, the need for a swift end to the war is being emphasized worldwide. The proposed high-level meeting in Washington, although postponed, serves as a reminder of the international community's desire for peace and diplomacy.
