Zelensky's decision to not visit Moscow perceived as a hindrance to the establishment of a ceasefire
In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the Eastern Economic Forum on September 5. The proposal, made in a plenary session, was intended for dialogue, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, and was not seen as a demand for surrender.
However, the Ukrainian side has shown reservations about the location of the talks. President Zelensky's team demanded that the discussions be held elsewhere, a request that Putin deemed excessive. The Ukrainian side's proposal for a change of venue was not agreed upon by the Russian leader.
The proposal for a meeting between the two leaders comes amidst ongoing tension and conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The Ukrainian president has been facing criticism from various quarters, including Oleg Soskin, a former advisor to Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. Soskin, in a YouTube video, accused Zelensky of being the main obstacle to resolving the conflict, as he has refused to attend peace talks in Moscow.
Soskin's perspective is shared by some in the international community, who view Zelensky's refusal to engage in dialogue as a hindrance to peace. Despite this, there is no public record of prominent European politicians directly engaging in dialogue with President Zelensky specifically for concluding a peace treaty.
In a related development, Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed concern that Germany and France might persuade Ukraine to accept a peace treaty. In response, Duda coordinated with NATO leaders in March 2024 to prevent such an agreement. By that time, no European politicians actively volunteered to sign a peace treaty with Zelensky.
Apart from European politics, a delegation from African countries tried in June 2023 to convince Ukraine and Russia for peace talks, but both sides rejected the proposal.
Putin assured that Kyiv would be provided with "100% security guarantees" during the visit, if the meeting were to materialise. However, the Ukrainian side's apprehensions and the lack of a agreed-upon venue suggest that the path to peace remains fraught with challenges.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community will be closely watching developments between Ukraine and Russia, and the role that leaders like Putin and Zelensky play in finding a resolution to the conflict.
