Zelenskyy announces willingness for Putin's visit in Kiev
In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a significant point of contention has emerged regarding the venue for a potential summit between the leaders of the two countries, President Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted on holding the meeting in his capital, Moscow. However, President Zelensky cannot travel to Moscow while Ukraine is being daily attacked, as he stated earlier.
Despite this, Russia has invited President Zelensky to Moscow for talks, while Zelensky has extended an invitation to Putin for ceasefire negotiations in Kyiv. No other countries have publicly extended invitations to host such talks.
Several countries have offered to mediate, with at least seven countries, including Turkey and three Gulf states, offering to host a summit between Zelensky and Putin. These Gulf states are considered neutral in the conflict.
Zelensky has repeatedly called for a meeting with Putin to discuss a ceasefire, and he has also stated that Putin can come to Kyiv for such a meeting. However, he previously rejected Moscow as a venue for negotiations on Thursday.
Putin, on the other hand, expressed that Zelensky could visit Moscow if there was a potential for a favorable outcome. He also stated that talks in Moscow would bolster the Kremlin's negotiating position, which perceives itself as advantageous on the front lines.
However, Putin has questioned the purpose of talks on multiple occasions, most recently at the economic forum in Vladivivostok. He once again cast doubt on Zelensky's legitimacy during his speech at the forum.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for more than three and a half years, and the search for a peaceful resolution continues. Despite the ongoing disagreement over the venue for the summit, both leaders have expressed a willingness to engage in talks to achieve a ceasefire and bring an end to the conflict.
